Proof of financial responsibility filed with the Department of Revenue, a self-insurance certificate (for a business or religious organization) issued by the Missouri Department of Revenue. While the minimum car insurance requirements in Missouri are predefined, they are not intended to be a limit on the amount of coverage you can or should get. Uninsured motorist insurance provides protection for damage suffered as a result of an accident caused by a person who is uninsured or does not have enough insurance to cover the cost of their damages. This extra layer of protection covers you if you're involved with a driver who doesn't have car insurance.
Always have your insurance identification card as proof of insurance in case a law enforcement agent requests it when you are stopped. You may have heard the term “SR-22 insurance” before, but contrary to popular belief, it's not actually a type of insurance. UMBI coverage covers all medical and related expenses you incur if you have a car accident and the at-fault driver has no liability insurance or cannot be identified. The SR-22 is a certificate that the auto insurance company must submit to the state in certain cases, for example, if you are trying to have your license reinstated, to show that you meet the minimum insurance requirements.
Your liability insurance will also cover the cost of any pain and suffering that can be determined for a person who is injured in any car accident for which you are at fault. Liability insurance covers damages resulting from any car accident up to the limits set by the insurance policy. In Missouri, it's illegal to drive, maintain, or own a car without being able to prove that you have insurance that covers a minimum level of damage as a result of a car accident, even if you are not at fault. However, some companies, such as Direct Auto, offer non-standard insurance (high-risk car insurance) to those drivers.
